# Choose and edit themes

Canonical HTML: [Choose and edit themes](https://getred.dev/docs/themes). Website source: `b212874eefaf200143affa21c770fbb8855a4f5c`. Documented Red release: v0.9.1. Installer source: `b86a2ca4b92e9547d3b174910c82db8a259f5171`.

Preview bundled themes, keep a selection, or eject a JSON theme into your configuration directory.

<a id="browse-themes"></a>

## Browse themes

Press `Space t` or choose **Browse themes** from the command palette. Moving through the picker previews each theme. `Esc` restores the original; `Enter` selects and persists the highlighted theme.

<a id="set-a-theme-directly"></a>

## Set a theme directly

```toml
theme = "red.json"
```

Add the filename to `config.toml`. Run `red --runtime-files` to list every visible theme and its source.

<a id="customize-a-bundled-theme"></a>

## Customize a bundled theme

```shell
red --eject themes/red.json
red --runtime-files
```

The ejected file is placed in the `themes` directory under Red's configuration directory. A user file shadows the bundled theme with the same name until you remove it. Use `--eject-force` only when you intend to replace an existing custom copy.
